(NT 9198 5552) Bastle (NR) (Ruin)

OS 6"map, Berwickshire, 2nd ed., (1908).

There is now no trace of Foulden Bastle whose last remains were removed c 1835. Some stones, two skews of a gable with faces roughly carved on the under side, and a much weathered stone bearing a Scotch thistle, are set in the wall of one of the farm buildings. Its last occupant was George Ramsay, a well-known Border robber who died in 1592 (see NT95NW 14)

RCAHMS 1915, visited 1908; Name Book 1856.

The detail shown on the OS 6"map, 1908, is the remains of a dovecot; the remains incorporated in farm buildings referred to by RCAHMS are at NT 9199 5545. Although no confirmation was obtained during field investigation, a strong promontory to the west of the dovecot would seem a probable site for this Bastle.

Visited by OS(JLD) 12 January 1955.

RCAHMS and Dowson confirmed, although the dovecot was demolished c 10 years ago. An accurate site for the bastle could not be ascertained.
