Chapel farm takes its name from a chapel having been built here at one time.

Name Book 1857.

The chapel which existed on Chapel farm was possibly located at NT 7652 5685, where there are slight remains of foundations of a building. Considerable amounts of 12th - 13th century potsherds have been found in the field to the to the SW of this site (Information in letter from E E McKinnon, 11 Currie St, Duns 12 March 1969). Robson (J Robson 1896) states that this chapel, which was rectanguler and plain, was dedicated to St Mary Magdalene. Its last remains were removed in 1908, and the gravestones were also removed from the surrounding graveyard, which Johnston (R G Johnston 1953) states was for those who died in the

nearby hospital of Mary Magdalene (see NT75SE28). He adds that the chapel is mentioned in 1394.

The farmer at Chapel farm believes that the chapel and burial ground stood on a level shelf at NT 7657 5687 where, when ploughed, the soil is richer, with a considerable stone content. No knowledge of a hospital could be found.

All traces of this chapel and burial ground have disappeared.
