(NT 4958 7701) Dovecot (NAT)

OS 6" map (1854)

NT 4958 7701. The remains of a substantial rectangular structure, referred to locally as a 'castle', measure 6.3m x 5.2m with walls 0.7m thick. The extant remains are of two storeys; the ground floor is vaulted with slit windows in the NE and SW walls, a doorway in the SW side and a square window on the SE side, while the unroffed upper floor has a fireplace. No historical or traditional information could be gained from local enquiries (by OS (RDL) 31 October 1962).

A close examination revealed nothing to suggest that this building has been in use as a dovecot, but at NT 4952 7701 there is a lean-to shed with a dovecot-like appearance and it could have been to this building that the name "Dovecot" applied.

Visited by OS (BS) 14 October 1975.
