NT27SE 6 2575 7354.

(Name: NT 2575 7354) Site of (NAT) Grave Yard (NR)

OS 1/1056 map, (1854)

Prior to 1477, the burial place of the leading citizens of Edinburgh was within St Giles' Church, but by this date it had become so full that the ground between St Giles' and the Cowgate was given for use for burials. Human bones were found in 1910 when digging the foundations for the Chapel of the Knights of the Thistle in Parliament Square, and numerous others have been found at various times in the area. (See also NT27SE 17).

R Richardson 1910; RCAHMS 1951.

Visited by OS (J D) 25 December 1953.
