'The old monk's well lies buried about 20 yards below the east dyke of the kirkyard. The internal overflow was, fifty years ago, made into a well in the dyke leading along the common walk adjoining Kirkshotts garden. It is about 20 yards from the burn, on the glebe stone fence. It was used as the manse well for several hundred years before the now disused well, under the cairn in the present manse grounds, was built. The present manse well went "dry" in a night, in consequence of the mineral workings.'

A M Houston 1924.
