OS 6" map (1938)
Cromwell's army of just under 16,500 men encamped on Galachlaw, during his campaigns in the vicinity of Edinburgh in 1650. The camp was occupied on the 13th- 14th August, and again from 18th-27th August. It was re-occupied by him briefly in June 1651.
No remains of any work were visible in 1852, but Whyte notes 'the very places where their tents were pitched are still visible'.
