NT15NW 3 1214 5956.

(NT 1214 5956) Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map, (1961).

This round cairn, on the summit of East Cairn Hill, measures 55ft in diameter and 6ft to 8ft high. Many of its stones are of considerable size. The summit of the cairn has been altered by the erection of a surveyor's cairn on it. (RCAHMS 1929). It was opened (on an unspecified date), when a cist, measuring 3ft 8 ins by 2ft by 1ft 8 ins deep, was found. It contained earth with which numerous fragments of calcined human bones were mingled. Three barbed flint arrowheads were also found; one was donated to the Anatomical Museum of Edinburgh University by the late Mr John Henderson (W Turner 1917).
