(NT 0609 7326) Long Cists found AD 1900 (NAT)

Several long cists were found in March 1901 on Wyndford farm, about 130 yds NE of the farmhosue and near the bank of Binny Burn. The findspot is called "Potknowe", as a pot of gold was said to have been found there. The cists, found by a contractor levelling the surface of the field, were arranged in two rows, with traces of a third. Over 20 cists were found, at about 1' below the surface; they were all oriented E-W, except two which were apart, and lying N-S. Most of the cists were c.6' long, and composed of freestone or shale slabs. One cist contained a rich mould, but no bones or relics were found.

Long cists were in use mainly during the 5th-8th or 9th centuries.

NT 0608 7326. Mr Weddell (Wyndford) found two more long cists at the same site in about 1948 at a depth of one foot while ploughing. They were of tyipcal size and oriented approximately E-W; no bones were seen and the slabs broke up under the plough. He indicated the findspot on the ground.
