In September 1991 two machine-dug trenches were examined by the Scottish Urban Archaeology Trust Ltd (SUAT) in a cleared area on the W side of Cow Vennel. The trenches were excavated in advance of a development proposed by Mr W Sutherland to evaluate the potential impact on the archaeology. Trench A reached a sondage depth of 2m and revealed a dark loam containing medieval or post-medieval pottery over which were the demolition remains and walls foundations of 19th century buildings, c. 1.5m thick. Trench B, at the S end of the area reached a depth of 1.25m and revealed a sequence similar to trench A. Natural deposits were not reached in either trench.
