(Area centred NS 7930 9366) Attached to, but of greater antiquity than the present Town House and jail on the north side of St John Street, is a two-storey building with a crow-stepped gable to the street. The ground floor is occupied as a stable and the first floor is entered by an outside stair. A close passes under the house, connecting the street with Broad Street. The back wall has a projecting turret for a stair originally connecting the second and top floors. There is no date upon the building, but it appears to be older than the adjoining house, which bears the date 1611.

The house is alleged to have been the residence of the town's 'Staffman' or hangman.

NS 7931 9366. Sited by ex-Provost Gourlay, who knew it before its demolition on account of its unsafe condition about twenty years ago (i.e. about 1930). The site is still vacant, and covered with refuse. Visited by OS (FDC) 26 June 1950
