Burgess Group II; Trump Group I. Early type, of Acton Park stage.

A Morrison 1979

This rapier came from the River Forth near Fords of Frew, NW of Gragunnock, and is held in the Hunterian Museum, University of Glasgow, under accession number A.1978.1. The lozenge-section of the blade is characteristic of Group II, while the two rivet-holes and two notches of its hilt place it within the Taplow type of Schmidt and Burgess; this is the first example of this type from Northern Britain. Group II comprises dirks and rapiers with lozenge-shaped blades, and is dated within the earliest part of the Middle Bronze Age, although it may have persisted later.

Information from Mr B O'Connor and Mr T Cowie, 10 January 1995.
