The Merchant's Hall stands on the S side of the Bridgegate. A translation of the latin inscription on the wall is: "This hall was founded by the pious liberality of the Merchants of the City of Glasgow in 1601 and rebuilt and enlarged in 1659." The Hall was taken down in 1818, leaving only the tower and spire known as the "Bridgegate Steeple", now the property of the Corporation.

A Gordon 11872; J M'Ure 1736; J Millar 1896.

The 'Bridgegate Steeple' is still standing, in a good state of preservation. There are signs of modern facing and pointing to be seen. Surveyed at NS 5931 6466.

Visited by OS (F D C) 10 September 1951.
