(NS 34873 59338) Bridgend Bridge (NR)

OS 6" map (1958)

The arch of Bridgend Bridge "of elegant masonry work and worthy of notice on account of its antiquity", was repaired and widened in 1814. It is mentioned by Montgomery of Westlands in 1650. The previous existence of a bridge here in 1525 can be inferred from a rental of Paisley Abbey, and in 1626, from a charter of James VI. Nothing definite is known of its origin.

NSA 1845 (R Smith)

No significant feature of antiquity is now discernible in this small, single-arched bridge in dressed stone. The 19th century and later alterations probably conceal all earlier work.
