The church of Kirkmichael, dedicated to St Michael, was granted to the Prior and Canons of Whithorn, in Galloway, and was comfirmed to them by Robert I in May 1325. The old church existed till 1787 when it was replaced by a new building.

J Paterson 1852; G Chalmers 1824

NS 3454 0896. The present church of Kirkmichael, built in 1787, is still in use as a place of worship. There is no trace of the old church, which presumably stood on the same site.

A church is shown in the approximate position of the present building on Armstrong's 1775 map of Ayrshire. Headstones dating from 1506 lie in the graveyard (Kirkmichael Parish Church guide). No further information.
