Carcluie Loch NS 3487 1613 NS31NW 34

In the late 19th century 'pile-heads' were seen around part of an island in Carcluie Loch, but when Smith excavated a few holes on it he only encountered soft mud and an occasional stone. The island is no longer visible, the SW end of the loch being entirely overgrown with reeds,

but probing at the position shown on the OS 1:10,000 map showed that the natural deposits in this part of the loch are over 2m deep.

RCAHMS 1985, visited (SH) March 1985.

(Smith 1895, 157-8).
