OS 6" map, Forfarshire and Angus, 2nd ed., (1926)

The foundations of the Castle of Whitehills were dug up in 1811; it was a ruin in the 17th century.

NSA 1845.

There are some vestiges of the old and first baronial residence of Kinnell, a short distance SW of Kinnell church. These remains are known as White Walls.

A J Warden 1880-5.

A rectangular cropmark at NO 5991 5007 on RCAHMS air photographs was investigated in advance of a proposed housing development. This marked the site of Kinnell Castle and was found to have been destroyed by earlier gravel extraction and a sewer trench.
