NO39NE 8 3522 9515.

The 12th century timber stronghold of the Earls of Mar, and of the Bissets in the 13th century, quite probably occupied the prominent rounded hillock (Craig of the Knock: NO 353 955) about 1/4mile NE of Knock Castle (NO39NE 4), if it did not stand on the site of that tower.

E Meldrum 1957.

There is no trace of a motte on Craig of the Knock, or any one of the hillocks in the vicinity of Knock Castle, nor at the site of the later Knock Castle.

Visited by OS (N K B) 13 November 1968.

Listed.

Scottish Castle Survey 1988; N Bogdan and I B D Bryce 1991.
