An excavation at the Central District School, March to July 1983, revealed a sequence of deposits spanning the 13th to 17th Centuries. Notable features included a sequence of medieval furnaces, a medieval timber building, a medieval stone building and a post medieval building with an associated smithing complex. Evidence of a recut, north-south ditch along the east edge of the excavation was also recovered. Finds included a side range of domestic artefacts, a number of coins, a gold finger ring and an amber finger ring.
