(NN 7216 0124) Bridge of Teith (1535) (NAT)

(NN 7216 0122) Chapel (NR) (Site of).

OS 6" map, (1958).

The Bridge of Teith, of two arches, was built in 1535 by Robert Spittel, tailor to Queen Margaret. A wall, said to have been part of an old chapel, was still visible in 1844.

New Statistical Account (NSA, Rev G Mitchell - 1844), 1845

This bridge shows no obvious traces of antiquity, with the exception, possibly, of the cut-waters. It was widened in 1866 (inscription on parapet) to double its original width, on its west side. There is no trace of any foundations at the published site of the chapel and no information about a chapel was found.

Visited by OS( WDJ) 18 October 1968.

NN c. 721 012. Nothing now remains of the chapel said to have stood close to the Bridge of Teith; part of one wall was still standing in 1844.
