(NN 6686 3600) Mains Castle (NR) (Remains of)

OS 6" map (1900)

Mains is the name of a croft where the old castle ruins are situated. We have no account of the builder. The last occupant was probably Colin Campbell, the last laird of his family.

W A Gillies 1938

Mains Castle appears to have been a small rectangular unvaulted castle of probable 16th - 17th century date (SDD List). It is situated on a small, debris-covered knoll and meassures about 14.0m x 6.7m over walls 0.8m wide. The SW wall stands to a height of about 4.0m and contains the remains of a small round-arched window and a fireplace. The remaining walls can only be traced with difficulty amid debris and dense nettles. The foundations of the croft mentioned by Gillies lie immediately S of the castle.
