Fearn Abbey: said to have been founded by Ferquhard, earl of Ross, at Farne beside Kincardine in Strathcarrin, 1221-2 or c.1227 whence the abbey was transferred to a site in the parish of Tarbat, after which it was called New Fearn.

Its mother-church was Whithorn, dedicated to St. Ninian.

Source: D E Easson 1957.

Relics of St. Ninian are said to have been brought north from Whithorn at the foundation of Fearn Abbey.

Source: New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

The Abbey stood at Fearn, probably Middle Fearn, where vestiges of its buildings seem to have been visible till the end of the 16th century.
