A quarry, from which querns of the 'Abrach' type have been obtained, was found in the island of Heisgeir. The source is a rock on a sea-creek, from which scores of these querns have been cut. The quern-cutting was in all stages of progress and the marks of the tools used were visible. (Carmichael suggests that this is the type-site, and that this type of quern is '... no older that a few hundred years ...')

A A Carmichael 1871.

The querns were quarried from a rock on the north side of Port Roy at NF 6436 6160 which is almost covered at high tide and barely accessible by foot at low tide. The marks of cutting are clearly visible in the NE face of the rock.

Visited by OS (J T T) 18 June 1965.
