NB 4263 3676. Three stone axes and a flint fragment were found in 1977 in peat cuttings at this spot. The axes, which measured 110mm x 56mm x 30mm, 115mm x 26mm x 29mm, and 109mm x 50mm x 22mm, were found arranged touching with tips down, while the flint fragment lay beneath them, at the bottom of the peat. It measured 37mm x 30mm x 12mm. These items are in the possession of the finder, Mrs Morrison, 100 Newmarket, Lewis.
DES 1977; Information contained in letter from M and G Ponting to J Close-Brooks (National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland [NMAS]) 20 February 1979.
The position of the axes when found suggests that they were buried in a container, perhaps a bag. They are made from foliated quartzitic gneiss.
