HY41NW 4 4205 1996.

(HY 4205 1996) Brough (NR) (Site of)

OS 6"map, Orkney, 2nd ed.,(1900).

The farmhouse of North Ettit is built on the site of a prehistoric structure, the precise nature of which is doubtful.

Although the OS marks it as a broch it is said that some years ago a small quern of ancient type was discovered here in what is stated to have been an underground house, the walls of which were five feet thick. (J Fraser 1928).

The occupier in 1928 had frequently dug up the refuse of a kitchen-midden deposit, and has recovered several boars' tusks.

RCAHMS 1946.

North Ettit is built upon a prominent rise, of which the profile is accentuated by what must have been a substantial mound.

Mr Linklater, the present farmer, (Information from Mr H Linklater, North Ettit) is of the opinion that the site is occupied by a broch, because of the quantity of broch-like stones he has encountered.

Visited by OS(AA) 19 June 1967.
