CARMUNNOCK

Carmunnock, part of the former Castlemilk estate since the 17th century, remains a charming village centred on some 17th-century cottages around the green. Some neat villas were built on the edges in the 1930s. Incorporated into Glasgow at the 1975 Local Government Re-organisation, it is the only rural village in the City. Agriculture, hand-loom weaving and, from the mid-19th century to the 1930s, linen washing for city restaurants and well-off households, were the sources of employment.
