Roxburgh Barns is situated about 2km south-west of Kelso, near the southern bank of the River Tweed. The steading probably dates from the early nineteenth century and formed part of the Duke of Roxburghe's estate. Like many large farms, Roxburgh Barns probably had several farm labourers to help work the farm and had cottages to house them

Plans of Roxburgh Barns, drawn up some time between 1826 and 1837 for the Duke of Roxburghe, show a row of eight farm cottages which lay to the south of the steading. Each cottage comprised a single room with a single window in its rear wall.
