Mellerstain Home Farm is shown on the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey map of Berwickshire, dated 1862. The farm buildings, which would have included barns, cattle courts, stables and cart sheds, were arranged in a rectangular layout around a central courtyard.

The presence of a 'Home Farm' or a 'Mains Farm' was essential to the successful running of any large estate, for it was here that produce could be raised to feed the household and, in addition, provide supplementary income.
