Despite its classification from excavation as a kiln, Thorny Hillock (name verified) would appear to be a typical burnt mound, situated at the edge of boggy ground. The mound, generally as described, is roughly U-shaped with the open end facing the wet area, though this effect is enhanced by the old excavation trench. Burnt stones are exposed here and there in the mound.
