This programme originated with transfer of the Scottish Industrial Archaeology Survey unit from the University of Strathclyde to RCAHMS in 1985, but also has roots in RCAHMS industrial recording activities of the previous two decades, as manifested in the publication 'Monuments of Industry'. Until 2005 the programme operated alongside the Threatened Buildings Survey. Although threat-driven, it also specialised increasingly on targeted historic industries that were sufficiently intact to enable the collation of a substantial record, in collaboration with colleagues in RCAHMS Collections, external archive bodies and museums. Its remit also covers public utilities and transport infrastructure.
