'Cairn', Càrn Cùil ri Èirinn, Iona (NM 257 223)

Only a modern cairn survives on the summit of Druim an Aoineidh (74m OD) where there is the site known as Càrn Cùil ri Èirinn (‘Cairn of [him who turned his] back on Ireland’, an epithet traditionally applied to St Columba). Associations with the arrival of the saint are recorded in local tradition from the end of the 18th century (Garnett, I, 248), but there is no mention of an ancient cairn in any early authority.

RCAHMS 1982, visited May 1973.
