Monifieth 5 (St Regulus), Angus, cross-shaft fragment

Measurements: H 0.53m, W 0.11m to 0.23m, D 0.13m

Stone type: sandstone

Place of discovery: NO 495 323

Present location: National Museums Scotland

Evidence for discovery: found re-used at the foot of the kirkyard wall in 1928 and given to NMAS.

Present condition: very worn and damaged.

Description

This fragment represents the top of the shaft of a very slender cross edged by roll moulding. It is carved in relief on face A with the lower part of a crucifixion scene, with Christ from the waist down dressed in a knee-length tunic and a human figure on either side. Beneath the cross is a panel of very badly worn interlace. On face C there are traces of ornament within a roll moulding frame. On narrow face D is what appears to be an ogham inscription on a wavy stemline, but this may not be original.

Date range: tenth century.
