The tanker cleaning installation located on the east jetty (NS37NW 18.01) of the Great Harbour, was part of the repair facility proposed by the Firth of Clyde Dry Dock Co. in 1960. It was completed in 1964 alongside the Greenock Graving Dock (NS37NW 17) at an estimated cost of £4.25 million and was designed to accept tankers of up to 150,000 tons deadweight tonnage. It is depicted on the 1:1250 OS Town Plan Greenock (1965, Sheet NS3075NW – A). A gas freeing unit and hose handling structure were also incorporated in to the tanker cleaning installation. Today the Great Harbour is used as a marina with around 100 berths available on 3 ‘T’ shaped piers that protrude from the east embankment. A shipbuilding and repair company still occupies buildings on the embankment.
