In 1872, the Royal Hotel was refashioned in flamboyant French Gothic manner by Andrew Maitland and Sons, probably in response to this burgeoning tourist traffic. While it was the grandest hotel, catering for the upper range of travellers, there were also smaller ones, such as the Railway Hotel (c 1875) (fig 24), providing accommodation for visitors and commercial travellers.

Information from ‘The Scottish Burgh Survey, Historic Tain: Archaeology and Development’, (2009).
