The first multi-storey public housing project to be built in the country: an eight-storey block of 88 one-room dwellings for single women (and caretaker's flat). Here, the modernity of high building was used to distance this new type fof small dwelling from the, by then, unsavoury connotations of the old-style 'single-end'. In contrast to the layour of the Corporation's 1944 Castlemilk proposal as parallel 'Zeilenbau' slabs, Crathie Court is an asymmetrical slab-like block, faced in concrete blockwork, with massive projecting balconies. Bradbury was an admirer of American skyscrappers, and his reliance on what he termed 'the grouping of masses' harks back to the Art Deco monumentalism of the 1930s. (Fig. 4.50).
