Scope and Content Front face of Pictish cross-slab no. 2, Meigle, Perthshire By the 8th century Meigle was probably an important ecclesiastical centre, with powerful royal patrons. There may have been a church or monastery and a burial-ground which attracted secular burials. Architectural fragments have also been found. The front of the cross-slab is carved with a cross, enriched with bosses derived from metalwork. Underneath are carvings of fantastic animals. There is a series of projections on the side and top as if the slab were intended to be slotted into a wall. The Pictish cross-slabs, carved in high relief, combined abstract ornament similar to that found on metalwork and in illuminated manuscripts, with symbols, animals, horsemen or hunting scenes. However, some stones at Meigle do not display Pictish symbols. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
