Scope and Content South-east Canna, Sanday and part of Rum, Small Isles, Inner Hebrides, Highland Canna, Sanday and Rum lie between the mainland and the Outer Hebrides. Together the islands form part of the Small Isles National Scenic Area. Canna and Sanday were gifted to the National Trust for Scotland in 1981 by the late Dr J L Campbell. Rum, a National Nature Reserve, was bought by the Nature Conservancy Council (now Scottish Natural Heritage) in 1957. This aerial view shows the south-east coast of Canna (bottom left), Sanday (centre right) and part of Rum (top right). Canna harbour can also be seen (centre). The stacks of Coroghon Castle and Alman are visible in the distance, off the coast of Canna (far centre left). With their rich and fertile soils and sheltered natural harbour, Canna and Sanday have produced evidence of settlement from the Neolithic period (c.4000-2000 BC). Some of the earliest evidence of human settlement in Scotland has been found on the less fertile and more mountainous island of Rum (c.7500 BC). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
