Scope and Content Dun Gerashader from east, Skye, Highland Dun Gerashader, an Iron Age fort, is situated on a flat-topped ridge near the River Chracaig, about one mile from Portree. The top of the rock bears the ruins of walls and barriers of boulders. The fort would probably once have sheltered timber and stone structures for accommodation and storage. This shows the fort on its rocky site overlooking the surrounding area. A huge dry stone wall originally protected the top of the site, and part of this can be seen as a sweeping band of stones in the centre of the plateau. Three lines of large boulders set on their edges can be seen on the lower slopes to the left of the collapsed wall, once forming a barrier to invading enemies. Although very little remains of the original structure, the impressive location and ruined walls and stone barriers suggest the importance and strength of this fort. Forts such of this would probably only been occupied in times of danger or threat from attack. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
