Scope and Content Plan of Elsay broch, Caithness, Highland On a low sea promontory, next to flat farmland at Elsay, Wick, Caithness, stands a broch which was excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) in 1902. This was one of a number of brochs excavated by Barry between 1890 and 1904. This ink plan was produced by John Nicolson (1843-1934) in 1902. The drawing is an excellent example of Nicolson's draughtsmanship and attention to detail. The drawing shows not only the broch structure and associated architecture, such as stairs, as well as other important features. For example, the 'well' or underground chamber in the stairs and the secondary walling added to the outer face. Nicolson was born at Stemster, near John O' Groats. When he moved to Nybster he actively pursued his two interests of archaeology and art. He was a keen sculptor and carried out a number of excavations, illustrating sites and artefacts in sketches and drawings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
