Scope and Content Watercolour of a bone point from Keiss Road broch, Caithness, Highland Keiss Road, or Kirk Toft's, is located next to a cemetery just off the main road north of Keiss in north-east Caithness. It was excavated between 1893-5 by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907), who was the proprietor of the Keiss estate and lived in Keiss castle some 500m from the broch. The broch can still be visited today. This watercolour by John Nicolson (1843-1934) shows a bone point that was recovered during Barry's investigations at Keiss Road broch. It is likely to have been used to punch holes in leather. Such finds are commonplace on broch sites. Nicolson was born in Stemster, John O' Groats, and lived at Nybster for most of his life. He was a skilled sculptor and artist with a keen interest in the archaeology of the area and assisted with many of Barry's excavations. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
