Date 1904

Collection Papers of John Nicolson, antiquarian, Keiss, Caithness, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 876618

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Watercolour of Brabster broch, bone needle, antler, stone weight and stone object, Brabster broch, Caithness, Highland The broch at Brabster, Canisbay, Caithness, was partially explored by John Nicholson (1843-1934) of Nybster some time before 1910 at which time parts of a circular wall were uncovered. The site is no longer visible. This watercolour, drawn by Nicolson in 1904, shows a stylised depiction of the broch (right) with the suggestion of outbuildings. The four objects shown are a bone needle for sewing, a piece of antler (top left), a stone (possibly steatite) weight (centre) and an unidentifiable stone object (bottom left). Nicolson's caption indicates that all of the artefacts came from Brabster broch. If this is true then the drawing has an added importance, as subsequent records make no mention of most of these finds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
