Scope and Content John Nicolson, Caithness, Highland This photograph shows John Nicolson (1843-1934). As an artist and excavator, Nicolson is important to our understanding of the prehistory and history of Caithness. He was keenly interested in the archaeology of the county, collected many artefacts and participated in a number of excavations. Nicolson was born at Stemster, John O' Groats in 1843. In 1858, he moved with his family to the 'Half-Way House' at Nybster and, after his father's death, continued farming at Nybster until he died in 1934. He is buried in the graveyard at Canisbay church. Nicolson excavated a number of archaeological sites including brochs, cairns and cists. Crucially, he drew many of the structures and objects uncovered, often providing the only record of the excavations. His drawings are important to any study of Caithness archaeology and history.
