Scope and Content Watercolour of Kirk Stones, Caithness, Highland In north-east Caithness, near Stroupster, is a site called Kirk Stones. The site consists of four structures, one of which is said to be a chapel. A stone wall and ditch complex encloses the site and other large stones, some of them set on edge, lie within the enclosure. The excavation of the alleged chapel was begun by Laing before 1866 and completed by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907), the proprietor of the Keiss Estate. The other structures were cleared by John Nicolson (1843-1934). This watercolour is by Nicolson (1843-1934) and probably dates to c.1915-6. A small roughly square structure is shown, entered by a long passage with door jambs at the inner end. The floor is paved and along one side of the chamber is a narrow ledge or scarcement on which a fire has been constructed. Directly opposite, a stone projects from the wall, presumably acting as some form of division. The date and use of the structure is a mystery. Nicolson of Nybster, was a keen local artist and archaeologist. From c.1890 to 1920, he excavated a number of archaeological sites across Caithness. He also produced an invaluable pictorial record of the artefacts and structures he uncovered. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
