Scope and Content Watercolour of a stone pot and a bone handle from Canisbay and Hollandmey, Caithness, Highland The parish of Canisbay is found on the north-east tip of Caithness, the most northerly county in mainland Britain. The area is rich in archaeological and historical remains including Hollandmey Broch which was excavated by John Nicolson (1843-1934) in 1904. This watercolour by Nicolson shows two objects recovered from the parish at the start of the 20th century. The pot was a font from a church and the bone handle or whistle was found during the 1904 excavations at Hollandmey, or 'Hollomey', broch. Today, there is little trace of the broch. Nicolson was born at Stemster, John O' Groats in 1843. At an early age he became interested in sculpture and art, a love that was to continue throughout his life. After he moved to Nybster, Auckengill in 1858 he became actively involved in researching the prehistory and history of Caithness. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
