Scope and Content Kildonnan fort from west, Eigg, Small Isles, Highland The island of Eigg is one of the Small Isles along with Canna, Rum and Muck and lies 16km from the mainland. It has been inhabited since the Neolithic (c.4000-2500 BC) and later inhabitants have left traces of Bronze Age hut circles, Iron Age forts, early Christian crosses, Viking boat stems and 19th-century townships. Eigg was bought in 1997 by its residents in conjunction with the Scottish Wildlife Trust and the Highland Council. This shows Kildonnan fort (top right) on its rocky promontory and Kildonnan farm (bottom left). The fort was built on a site thought to be linked to the monastery of St Donnan, an idea reflected in its name, Rubha na Crannaig, meaning 'point of the pulpit'. St Donnan, a disciple of St Columba, settled on Eigg towards the end of the 6th century AD. He and his companions are said to have been murdered in 617 AD by a local Queen and her followers who saw his occupation of the island as a threat to their power.
