Scope and Content Halberry Castle from east, Caithness, Highland Halberry Castle was built in the 15th century, and was the stronghold of George Gunn, 7th Chieftain of Clan Gunn, and coroner or 'Crowner' of Caithness. The castle stands on a rocky promontory known as Halberry Head, but very little remains today, apart from the turf-covered stonework of a tower and wall. This shows the castle on its promontory site with steep cliffs on three sides and a rock-cut ditch on the landward side. This would have been crossed by means of a bridge and cut off by a drawbridge for security. Within a defensive wall beyond the bridge was a three-storeyed rectangular keep and other buildings such as stores, stables and kitchens. Many of the stones used in construction of the castle are said to have been reused by local landowners to build a network of stone dykes in the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
