Scope and Content Barrahead lighthouse, Berneray, Western Isles Berneray is the most southerly island of the Western Isles and, together with the neighbouring island of Mingulay, was made a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1983. In 1994 the islands were made a Special Protection Area because of their internationally important breeding colonies of seabirds. This shows Barrahead lighthouse (centre). On the promontory to the right of the lighthouse, is a fort or dun of probable Iron Age date. The wall of the lighthouse precinct abuts the wall of the dun which is recorded as having two galleries within it, one above the other. Barrahead lighthouse was designed by Robert Stevenson (1772-1850) and built in 1833. It became automated in 1980. Berneray was bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland by Miss J M Fawcett in 2000. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
