Scope and Content Drawing of a beaker from a cist at Acharole, Caithness, Highland A short cist, containing a crouched male inhumation and a beaker was found by Robert Sutherland in August 1904 when excavating gravel from a small mound near a standing stone at Acharole, Watten, Caithness. This ink drawing is by John Nicolson (1843-1934) of Nybster and shows the beaker found in the cist. Typical of Nicolson's drawings there is a good attention to detail, particularly of the ornament. The beaker may have been used for containing mead or beer and was perhaps associated with an important person, even a warrior. Nicolson sketched and painted many structures and artefacts uncovered across Caithness from around 1880 to 1920. A keen archaeologist, he travelled across the county excavating and recording the area's rich archaeological remains. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
