Scope and Content Dunrobin Castle and gardens, Sutherland, Highland Dunrobin Castle lies on the east coast of Sutherland. It is the traditional seat of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland and remains a private residence owned by the Countess of Sutherland. The castle is first mentioned in 1401 and was substantially remodelled and enlarged in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. This view from the south-east shows the castle (centre) with stairs leading down into the mid-19th century formal gardens in the foreground. Part of the walled kitchen gardens can also be seen (centre left) and there is a boat slipway on the shore (foreground). Dunrobin Castle is reminiscent of a French chateau and is largely the creation of Sir Charles Barry (1795-1860) who was employed to remodel the castle between 1835-1850. During the World War I the castle was used as a naval hospital and suffered a fire in 1915 that destroyed much of Barry's original interior. The present interior was redesigned by Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
