Scope and Content Castle Girnigoe and Castle Sinclair, Caithness, Highland The traditional seat of the Sinclair Earls of Caithness, Castle Girnigoe and Castle Sinclair occupy the same narrow, rocky promontory some 4.82km north-east of Wick, Caithness. This shows the two castles. Castle Girnigoe (centre) dates to the late 15th century and is the earlier and better preserved of the two. The ruins of Castle Sinclair lie in front of the older building, in what was once its outer ward. A rock cut ditch separates the two and a second ditch cuts the promontory off from the mainland. Castle Sinclair was built in 1606 as an addition to the earlier castle and not as replacement. Three circular, grass-covered mounds surrounded by ditches are visible (top). Lying between 6-12m apart, they appear to be modern (19th-20th century) and were possibly constructed as beacons. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
