Scope and Content Square of Whaligoe and Whaligoe Steps, Caithness, Highland The narrow inlet at Whaligoe offered little shelter for small fishing boats during storms and high spring tides. To prevent small boats being dashed against the rocks the fishermen would haul them out of the water and secure them to hooks that were fixed into the cliff face. This image shows Whaligoe steps winding down the cliff face to a small quay. At the top of the stairway is the Square of Whaligoe, a 19th-century dwelling with a fish curing yard attached. The mid-19th century Whaligoe corn mill can be seen (top right). The mill was water-driven and the mill wheel was inside the building and fed by a masonry aqueduct. Whaligoe, translated as 'whale geo' or inlet of whales, lies on the north-east coast of Caithness. It is a narrow inlet flanked by sheer cliffs that was a thriving fishing port in the mid-19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
